what to do when your power supply doesnt have enough sata connectors

  • #i
I bought an XFX 650w cadre edition and figured it would have a cable to power an SSD since its supposedly a decent PSU simply it appears it does not...am i missing something here? I dont know the proper noun of the plug so i deceit be of any help (appears to exist a SATA fifteen pin power connector). Would information technology be ok to apply an adapter?

If your SSD doesn't have a standard SATA connection, it'south a micro-SATA connection

Use this adapter:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812200788

Most of the SSD's I looked at on Newegg come with an adapter cable...and NONE of the power supplies I saw came with a built-in micro-SATA connector.

Thanks Boomer, simply i think it is merely the power part. Information technology's to the right of the SATA connection and i think its a SATA 15 pivot power connecter. Here's a pic:

I could swear previous PSUs i've used have had this. This new one i bought does non.

I chosen Frys and apparently they have this connector soooo off i go to spend coin for something else. :(

Thanks Boomer, only i think it is just the power office. It'southward to the right of the SATA connection and i call up its a SATA xv pin ability connecter. Here's a picture show:

I called Frys and apparently they have this connector soooo off i become to spend money for something else. :(

Everything I've read about that drive says information technology'south just a standard SATA connector. Your PSU should come with viii SATA power connectors. (probably 2 cables with four connectors each)
ane x Main connector (20+4Pin)
ane x 4+four Pin ATX12V / EPS12V
seven x Peripheral
viii 10 SATA
i ten Floppy
4 ten PCI-Due east

Yeah sir, but it'southward the ability part that isn't at that place. :(

explain...if the SSD takes a SATA power cable...and your PSU has eight SATA ability connections...then unless it takes a micro SATA adapter, you SHOULD exist skilful to go.

Please mail the exact model number of the Crucial SSD.

Wait...what?

I can connect the SATA cable from the SSD to the mobo. HOWEVER I see no power connectors to become from the PSU to the SSD.

I tin can connect the SATA cablevision from the SSD to the mobo. Nevertheless I see no power connectors to go from the PSU to the SSD.
According to the newegg link you provided above, that PSU has viii SATA connectors on it. In one of the pics, it shows one right in the heart of of the picture show. It doesn't have 8 of any other blazon of connectors, and so count them upwardly and meet which ones you accept 8 of and that'southward your connector. They too take five wires going into them, rather than four. Xanthous, black, cherry-red, black, and orangish.

Ok and then lets make this easier. Your power supply should take the following:

7 of these:

Which are iv pivot molex power connectors used for the last 20 years for powering iii.5" hard drives and optical drives.

eight of these:

Which are SATA Power connectors used for powering the standard SATA drives.

Now you might not take a standard SATA drive, and instead have an not-standard (for desktop), drive. Some of the outset drives used the 4pin molex connections, considering that is what everyone had in their computers. And then we saw the combination of both SATA ability and 4pin in the aforementioned drive, and you were to simply connect one or the other.

There is as well the e-SATA connector:

They combined both power and data into i cable.

Finally in that location is the micro-SATA connector:

So you lot either have a SSD that uses a micro-SATA, or else yous have something that has a proprietary pinout designed for laptops. Like the following:

Ok, then on the right side of the drive in the foreground (m4), that connector is a standard sata connector? It seemed way longer than any power connector I had.

On the left side I put a sata cable from the drive into the mobo.

Omg, I feel like I'one thousand a fucking idiot with tho bulldoze! I'm gonna google around. Sorry to take your guys' fourth dimension lol.

The M4 has standard SATA power and data connectors. Your PSU has a bunch of apartment black plugs, those are the SATA ability connectors. Plug it into the drive next to the data connector (it only fits one mode).

Uh, hey fellas, can nosotros forget this thread ever existed?

I guess the trouble was that this instance has the 2.5" drive mount on the very bottom and i could barely see it, and the little slot looked way longer than the plugs.

Thank you everyone! I feel like i owe y'all guys an amends. :awe: Especially boomer. :p

...carry on. :(

The molex connector has been used much longer than 20 years, effort closer to thirty and back then they ran every accessory in the organisation except for three.5 inch floppy drives.

To the best of my knowledge, those molex to SATA adapters simply pass 5v to the drives, which is fine for a HDD. The three.3volt lines are excluded. 3.three volts may be needed to run some SSDs just not a lot hard disk drives (HDD) use 3.3v.

To respond his question: All modern ATX PSUs sold today have at least one SATA power connector. For a newbie like your cocky, become a nice Seasonic PSU with a high efficiency rating and you'll be ready.

The XFX ability supply he bought is a Seasonic build. It'south VERY skilful quality.

The problem here wasn't the ability supply...it was the installer. :p

Built to XFX, not Seasonic's specs.
